My best advice would be to just get an iron shield and upgrade it a bunch. That should be enough to get you through the battle (trust me, I did NOT feel like going through all those bosses again either).

I had my doubts about SSHD, and it still may suck, but seeing them pick up an item without feeling the need to learn about it again is a dream come true. Everything else is bonus.
