Oh, what you do is first wrench the gear, turning it so that it lines up with one of paths, and stop by pressing SQUARE. It doesn't automatically stop for you. If you're having trouble finding where to go, there are 2 doors, and an ion path that you can walk up. I don't know if that helps enough...
