Between Canada Day and Independence Day, this has been quite the patriotic week for North Americans. When thinking about what song I should feature today, I was trying to come up with a way to tie in this week’s holidays to the feature. A few ideas came to mind, but none really worked right… until I thought of national anthems.

Canadians have “Oh, Canada.” Americans have “The Star Spangled Banner.” These songs are so reminiscent of their countries, you can identify them immediately once the first notes are played. So what sort of music does the Zelda series have that carries this same weight? What song or songs define the Zelda series and represent it as its “anthem?”

Title: Main/Title Theme
Game: The Legend of Zelda (NES/Famicom)

Okay, admit it. You saw this coming. The only other track that could compare to the renown of this one is the classic Hyrule Overworld Theme, and I already did a whole series on those. This song, right here, is the crowning jewel of the Zelda series’ music. It is THE song that defines the entire series. It is the refrain that plays when Nintendo wants you to know something Zelda-related is happening.

The thing is, I really don’t feel I can give adequate words for this song (plus it’s a holiday and I’m just plum lazy this week) so I think that today, we can just sit back and listen. Listen to the tune that defines Zelda. If you really wanna get into it, stand up and put your hand over your heart while facing the nearest Triforce. This is the Hyrule National Anthem.

Or, this is the Hyrule National Anthem. Take your pick.

Again, I would regularly take time to describe the song and explore the nuances that help it to stick out among the other tracks in the series, but this is one of those tracks that needs no description or introduction. Instead, I simply give it a spotlight. Please enjoy, and I will see you next week!
