Link Turned Female by Father for Daughter

Zelda has always been a family friendly type of game. It is a great way to bring families together while playing. One particular father wanted his daughter to know that girls can also be heroes. Some games give the option of playing as a girl or boy, however, Zelda games only have the option of naming our own characters.
After verbally reading the game’s story to his daughter and changing all of the “he’s” to “she’s” and so on, he wanted to take it a few steps further. This dedicated, and smart, father hacked The Wind Waker to change the words to fit to a girl player. In his weblog, he goes into detail telling how he did it using the Dolphin emulator along with some technical know-how to pull it off.

“You can pick your character’s name, of course—I always stick with Link, being a traditionalist—but all of the dialog insists that Link is a boy, and there’s apparently nothing to be done about it.
Well, there wasn’t anything to be done about it, certainly not anything easy, but as you might imagine I’m not having my daughter growing up thinking girls don’t get to be the hero and rescue their little brothers.”
This father is very clever in coming up with this idea. While I could not even begin to know how to do this kind of thing, it would definitely be something that I would want done for my child, if I had one. Equality in gender is a very important thing and should not be underestimated to any extent. Is the father’s hack something that you would have thought necessary? Is it overkill?
