Fanart Spotlight- Zelda

Today’s Fanart Spotlight is from a Canadian artist who has been contributing fanart and fan comics to the Zelda community for a number of years. Ladyjenise uses both both traditional and digital media for her work, but today we will be looking at a watercolor piece simply named Zelda. Modifying the Ocarina of Time character design, she has created a really stunning piece of art.

Zelda herself takes up the majority of the canvas. Her white dress is delicately shaded with blues and purples, giving the illusion of ripples without the use of rigid black lineart. The same technique is used to create the texture of flowing locks of hair. Watercolor is a remarkably flexible medium, but the values (The difference between the lightest point in the picture and the darkest) are very crucial. The shimmers of white in her hair are where the artist has simply let the white of the paper show through and has applied no color at all, and uses the more saturated colors for shading where shadows would fall.

The background is a very simple tunnel like pattern; pulling colors out from the princesses wardrobe, it looks quite striking against her golden hair color. Once again we can see the artist using white of the paper, but this time uses it to frame Princess Zelda and direct our eyes to her face.

Ladyjenise is an incredibly talented artist with more fantastic Zelda fanart than I’m able to share along with plenty of original work, so don’t miss out on it and check out her gallery on DeviantArt.
