As people with a lot gaming experience under our belts, we tend to forget what games are like for people who are unfamiliar with the medium. We may not realize how certain games, like Breath of the Wild for example, communicate to non-gamers. A recent analysis video by YouTuber Razbuten looks into this topic, citing his own experience watching his wife play the 2017 title.

A follow-up to an experiment Razbuten and his wife conducted earlier this year, this video identifies various ways Breath of the Wild eases new players into the experience, such as Z-targeting, the accessibility of its open world design, and the subtle way it introduces mechanics and strategy skills. And although they identified a learning curve with the game’s controls, the video praised the gameĀ for specifying where on the controller buttons are located. It ultimately concludes that Breath of the Wild‘s strength is that it allows players to do the “right things in the wrong ways”, as the game allows for multiple solutions for any given problem and does this in subtle ways that allow players to feel clever and confident.

All in all, Breath of the Wild is described as “challenging yet approachable”, a game where controllers aren’t thrown in frustration but kept in determination.
