In many ways, Breath of the Wild acts as throwback to the design philosophies of the original Legend of Zelda on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Players are — with little instruction — encouraged to explore the game world freely and discover secrets in an organic way, just as players had done back in 1986. Taking detailed notes and sharing secrets on the schoolyard were effective strategies back then, so we weren’t terribly surprised to learn that a certain player had taken advantage of a highly-detailed handmade map when tackling Breath of the Wild.

Japanese Twitter user @itika89 recently shared some images of a handmade recreation of Breath of the Wild‘s map that their mother had constructed. Not only is every region and landmark flawlessly represented, but the map’s creator also included the locations of Shrines, items, enemies. The map is humongous, by the way; @itika89 also shared a picture of the map with Breath of the Wild‘s case at its center for scale.

The precision and thorough attention to detail in this map are certainly something to marvel at. I am not only impressed by the skill demonstrated in its design and touched by the sentimental motives behind its creation, but I appreciate how the tactile nature of the map reminds me of the old days when we used to draw our own maps and take notes in the back of instruction manuals. I’ll probably stick to Zelda Dungeon’s guides, but it’s awesome knowing the spirit of old-school gaming is alive and well.

What do you think of this handmade map? Did you make anything similar when you played Breath of the Wild? Let us know in the comments!
