Last week, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom won “2023 Most Anticipated” at the Famitsu Dengeki Game Awards 2022. Following the announcement of Tears‘ victory, the event’s hosts read aloud a brief acceptance message by Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma. After expressing gratitude on behalf of the entire Tears of the Kingdom team, Aonuma provided a small but intriguing tease for the hotly anticipated title.

Anouma’s acceptance message, roughly translated by Twitter’s Genki_JPN, teased how Tears of the Kingdom‘s world will be changed through gameplay:

“In the previous title, Breath of the Wild, you were able to experience a new world of Zelda with the “freedom to go wherever and do whatever you want.” In the sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, furthermore, the player’s free imagination will be filled with new gameplay that will bring about changes to the game world.

I think that everyone who voted will feel pleasantly surprised and I hope you can enjoy the “unknown” Hyrule as you like.

Thank you!”

Aonuma’s teases provide further context to previous statements by Nintendo about Tears of the Kingdom, particularly that “the adventure is yours to create in a world fueled by your imagination.” We still don’t know to what extent our actions will truly affect the game’s world, but Aonuma’s statement opens up the possibilities that much more. Given what we’ve seen in trailers thus far, vehicle creation and terraforming seem like potential ways for players to change that world.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is scheduled to release on May 12th, 2023.
