Legendary Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has confessed in an interview with Edge magazine that he connects with Link as if our hero was his own child. Mr. Aonuma stated that he expressed his feelings while creating Twilight Princess and felt heartbroken about all the new challenges that awaited Link in the game. By having a close relationship with the character, Mr. Aonuma feels that Link really had become like his other child and cares for him greatly.

You can read the personal, heartfelt quote by Mr. Aonuma after the jump!

Mr. Aonuma expressed his personal feelings toward Link in the quote with Edge magazine below:

“When I first started making Zelda games, I was more interested in the enemy characters than in Link himself. But while I was making Twilight Princess, I was listening to the theme on an iPod while walking hand in hand with my child, and I suddenly burst into tears. I was thinking about all the awful trials Link would have to go through in the new game. I realized that Link really is my other child. I don’t inhabit the character so much as watch him from somewhere very close.”

It’s beautiful to hear how close Mr. Aonuma really is to our all-time green-clad hero even though he only happens to be a virtual character. Many Zelda gamers, including myself, feel the emotion while playing a game in the series as Link faces all the trials and hardship in each game, especially considering how young he actually is in most Zelda titles. Hopefully, the new Zelda adventures for 3DS and Wii U can continue to allow us to easily connect with Link and his task in the land of Hyrule.

Do you feel the same way about Link as Mr. Aonuma does? Can you easily connect with Link while playing a Zelda title? Please type in your comments below!
