The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma and Tears of the Kingdom director Hidemaro Fujibayashi recently sat down with Polygon for an interview to promote the latest hit Zelda title. While the interview covers a wide range of topics and is very much worthy of a full read-through, one particular topic discussed at the end has been making headlines this weekend.

Punctuating a lengthy interview focused primarily on Tears of the Kingdom‘s development, Polygon concluded things by asking Aonuma and Fujibayashi about the prospect of a Zelda film adaptation, given the recent success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie:

[Polygon] Just to ask you another question you probably can’t answer: Does the recent success of the Mario movie have you excited for the prospect of a Zelda adaptation?

Aonuma: I have to say, I am interested. For sure. But it’s not just me being interested in something that makes things happen, unfortunately.

Fujibayashi: Maybe the voice of the fans is what’s important here.

These brief statements are certainly nothing to build faith on, but it is nonetheless noteworthy to hear two key Zelda creatives endorse the possibility of a film adaptation. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see if anyone else at Nintendo or in the movie business shares Aonuma’s interest.

What about you? Do you share Aonuma’s interest? Do you think Zelda could work on the big screen? Let us know in the comments below!
