Update: Stephen Totilo, former Kotaku editor-in-chief and author of the Axios Gaming newsletter, shared a tweet clarifying that the cancelation is only for the 2022 event. The article’s previous wording has been preserved until official E3 channels have commented.

Original: The end of an era is at hand. Per industry veteran and Razer PR Lead Will Powers, in a report corroborated by IGN, E3 2022 has officially been cancelled. At the time of this writing, there’s been no official statement from the ESA, but IGN confirms that the association has reached out to its partners and informed them of the decision. The event, which had already been scaled back to a digital only presentation amid fears of rising COVID-19 cases, had a hard time in recent years in keeping pace with the ever-rising amount of companies opting for a controlled digital presentation that went straight to consumers. E3 is one of the oldest and most widely known video game expos, so its cancelation can only be considered sad and unfortunate.

Although Nintendo fans can probably still expect a Nintendo Direct around that same time, this news coupled with yesterday’s disappointing news of Breath of the Wild 2‘s delay has been this a tough week for the video games industry. Here’s hoping E3 sees a strong return in the future!
