I adore Link’s Awakening for a lot of different reasons, largely due to its unique setting, endearing cast of characters, and bittersweet ending. When I first played the game growing up, I don’t think I fully appreciated the moral dilemma of the story at the time — if it was a dream and it wasn’t real, why would any of Link’s actions matter? Why did Link’s awakening from his dream have the consequences it did?

Having played the game a couple more times since then with a greater appreciation for the nuance of the story, I think Razbuten’s recent video essay perfectly encapsulates what makes Link’s Awakening such a unique and wonderful experience. It’s unlike any other Zelda game because not only is it argued that Link isn’t truly the hero, but it begs the question of what his choice means and emphasizes the sacrifices made as a result.

What do you think? Do you think this video essay offers a deep dive of what makes Link’s Awakening so special? Let us know in the comments!
