The Legend of Zelda has followed a popular model of having a fairly linear story with dungeons, puzzles, and bosses throughout. Very few Zelda games have broken that mold of your basic story-driven RPG, but the most prominent one in my opinion would be Majora’s Mask. Today I would like to pose the question, would another game like Majora’s Mask work?

One of the things I love most about Majora’s Mask, outside of the wonderful story, was the time gameplay mechanic. You only had three days to save the world from being destroyed, but you had to play carefully and strategically in order to beat the game. No other Zelda game has that element of difficulty where you’re racing against the clock for the entirety of the story. There are also only certain things that you can do on certain days and times. It makes for an interesting game to play, but would it work again?

If the story were unique and some things were changed up maybe so, but I find it hard to think that another Zelda game with the same mechanic would be as good as Majora’s Mask. It would feel like it would not be original. Something about the three day time limit and being able to go back in time or forward in time would have to change. You could argue that Ocarina of Time did it first, but in my opinion the time element in Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask are two different beasts. At least in Ocarina of Time you aren’t contending with The Moon. So would it work again? I’m going to say, no. Unless one were able to think of something completely original and change things up it’s already been done, and Majora’s Mask did it so beautifully.

What do you think though? Would you like to see another Zelda game like Majora’s Mask, how you make it work? Let us know in the comments below.
