By far the most shocking announcement during Nintendo’s E3 Direct this year was the reveal that Nintendo is developing a sequel to Breath of the Wild. It astonishes me that a roughly two minute long trailer can yield so much content to break asunder, analyze, and even engender theories from. After seeing the reveal, Zelda fans immediately took to the internet, endeavoring to dissect what to expect from the sequel. Amidst all the speculation, what has generally been agreed upon so far is that this new game should be able to offer a more compelling story than its predecessor.

From the start, parallels were made between the Breath of the Wild sequel and Majora’s Mask. Developers of Majora’s Mask had more time to focus on the game’s narrative due to re-utilizing assets from Ocarina of Time. They only had about a year for development, yet arguably they made one of the best stories for a Zelda game — imagine what could have been done if they had more time! We don’t have to worry about the sequel to Breath of the Wild being released too quickly, because in a recent interview with Game Informer, Eiji Aonuma auspiciously confirmed that they won’t rush the sequel to Breath of the Wild like they did with Majora’s Mask, giving reason to hope for a fleshed out story. Contrarily, it’s been stated numerous times over the years that gameplay is always the foremost focus of a Zelda game, while story is only an afterthought; so whatever hope we have might be bleak.

From the brief trailer for the sequel to Breath of the Wild, do you think the game will have a deeper story? If so, what sort of story are you looking forward to? What aspects of Breath of the Wild should be expanded on, and if this will tie into any other games, what games should it connect to? Tell us in the comments below!
