It’s no secret by now that The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been a stunning success. Unlike many video game movie adaptations over the years, it was well received by fans, opening the door for potential sequels and possibly other series adaptions.

Video game producer Shigeru Miyamoto has hinted at the possibility of more Nintendo-based movies. Since The Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo’s most popular IP’s next to Mario, it doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility that we could see a movie in the coming years.

While this might seem like a dream come true for some fans, others might be skeptical of how Nintendo might handle a Zelda adaption on the big screen. The Super Mario Bros. Movie was successful in large part because of its fan service and light-hearted tone, which fits the tone and aesthetic of the games themselves. The Zelda series, by its nature, is a lot more serious than Mario. In order to make a successful film, they would have to take a wildly different angle. Done right, it could do incredibly well, paving the way for more and more video game movies. However, without the proper care and effort, a Zelda movie could easily become a disastrous flop, much like the infamous Legend of Zelda TV Series released in 1989.

Personally, I would love to see a movie set in the land of Hyrule. With that said, I think creating an original story, while including nods and references to the series, would be the best approach, rather than trying to adapt one specific game. If the film were to try and follow the story of Ocarina of Time for example, the filmmakers would have to make many changes to make it work, which would undoubtedly upset many fans.

Do you think Nintendo will make a Zelda movie next? What would you like to see in the movie if they did? Or are you opposed to the idea entirely? Let us know in the comments below!
