Daily Debate: Who Is Your Choice To Compose The Score For The Upcoming Zelda Movie?
Posted on December 22 2023 by Sean Gadus

Music is a crucial part of the identify of the Zelda series. From the beginning, the iconic music and memorable sound effects have helped elevate the series above many other fantasy and adventure games. With the music from the Zelda series being so beloved, the movie has a lot to live up to. Some of the biggest questions about the upcoming Zelda film project are related to the film’s music. Two of the biggest questions are who will compose the music for the project and how will this composer use existing music from the series in the film?
With this in mind, who is your choice to compose the score for the upcoming Zelda film?
First, I want to note that it is my belief that Nintendo and Sony will select a composer or composers who has significant experience in the film industry, so while you can expect to hear remixes of some of your favorite Zelda songs, I do not expect Koji Kondo or any other Zelda composer to be the primary composer on the Zelda movie. For example, Brian Tyler was the primary composer for the Super Mario Bros. Movie, though he worked closely with Koji Kondo throughout the process. It is possible that a similar situation would occur for the Zelda movie, though I will be thrilled if a composer tries to create a lot of new pieces for the film.
Overall, my top choice for this assignment is a composer who has won critical acclaim in some huge film and television projects: Ludwig Göransson. The Swedish composer has created a diverse set of scores. Some of the composer’s best work can be seen in films like Creed, Black Panther, The Mandalorian (Seasons 1 and 2), and Oppenheimer. Göransson re-invigorated Star Wars music by creating a distinct sound and musical identity for the The Mandalorian, and the composer has shown the ability to handle both epic moments and smaller, more intimate scenes. Another composer that would be an intriguing choice is Bear McCreary. While not as well-known as Ludwig Göransson, Bear McCreary has create music for fantasy projects like The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power and the new of God of War games. Interestingly enough, God of War is a Sony project (like the Zelda movie), though Sony’s video game and film divisions are largely separate. Bear McCreary would be an interesting choice since he straddles the line between film and video game composer.
