Halloween — the year’s most important holiday — is tomorrow, friends. With that in mind, I’ve been thinking about how The Legend of Zelda has creeped me out throughout the past couple decades. For a series as whimsical as this one, there’s a surprising amount of unsettling imagery scattered across these games. Specifically, I’ve found that many of my spookiest Zelda memories are derived from the myriad boss fights. And no entry delivers more consistently in this department than my favorite Zelda game, Twilight Princess.

Whereas each of the other 3D titles certainly boast a couple of unnerving bosses — Ocarina of Time’s Bongo Bongo comes to mind immediately — the Zelda team seemed to have placed a mandate that all the big-baddies in Twilight Princess be large and creepy. From the parasitic Diababa to the skeletal Stallord, most of these guys would feel right at home in Dark Souls.

That said, with each subsequent playthrough, the Temple of Time’s Armogohma always proves to be the most successful at giving me the heebie-jeebies. I already have an innate fear of spiders; throw in a giant one that shoots laser beams while crawling on the ceiling, and there’s no question — for me, that’s as scary as it gets.

I’d love to hear from you all, though. Which Zelda boss do you fear the most and why? Let us know in the comments below!
