I wouldn’t necessarily call the Zelda series “difficult.” Sure, The Legend of Zelda and The Adventure of Link are tough games to play and complete. But compared to the rest of the NES library, their difficulty is fairly middle of the road. As the series continues, I could almost argue that the games decrease in difficulty, if anything. Undoubtedly, Nintendo tried to maintain challenge through puzzles and dungeon bosses without alienating their established audience. Still, each game had a boss or two that could really give you fits.

Some bosses were difficult because of the mechanics in the fight. Mothula in A Link to the Past is a perfect example of this. The boss itself isn’t particularly difficult, if it weren’t for the boss room. You’re thrown into a confined room with a shifting floor and spike traps flying all around you. In Majora’s Mask, a boss like Gyorg could give newcomers trouble, especially if you find yourself in the water surrounding the platform fairly often.

Other bosses can be a drain on your resources, requiring skill and accuracy. The magic requirement for Trinexx in A Link to the Past or Bongo Bongo from Ocarina of Time highlight this point well. Without enough magic to use the Ice or Fire Rods, or an inability to activate the Lens of Truth, these two bosses can be either exceptionally difficult (Bongo Bongo) or actually impossible (Trinexx). Certain other bosses could have difficult patterns, large health pools, or hit Link like a truck. However, with preparation, each boss can be felled in no time!

Looking back, I remember having the most trouble fighting Blind in A Link to the Past. The erratic movement was bad enough, but then you had floating heads and fireballs to contend with. As a child, it was a fight that frustrated me, and gave me the biggest rush when I finally won!

What Zelda bosses gave you the most trouble? Let me know in the comments!
