What’s the first name that comes to mind when you think about villains in the Legend of Zelda series? More often than not, Ganondorf, the King of Evil himself is the one that people talk about. But is he really the best villain?

Ganondorf to Link is like Bowser to Mario. The two seem destined to fight for eternity, thanks to a curse placed on Link by Demise in Skyward Sword. It’s a good formula to ensure Nintendo will always have games to make in the series. With that said, I feel like sooner or later the formula may grow stale. Is Demise really so powerful that the curse will last forever?

Personally, a lot of my favorite Zelda games are the ones that branch away from this formula, giving us unique and interesting villains. From the traitorous Vaati, to the witty and charming Ghirahim, or the tragic Skull Kid, Nintendo has proven they don’t always need to fall back on the King of Evil in every title. In any story, the villain plays a major role in compelling the hero forward, and I think many of these examples have done the job just as well, if not better, than Ganondorf.

Who is your favorite Zelda villain? Do you think Ganondorf should continue his reign in future titles, or would prefer more original antagonists going forward? Let us know in the comments below!
