Spoilers are coming!

Last warning!

Having just finished my second playthrough of the game, I have a lot more questions this time around (and a lot more fondness for the adventure as well). Tears of the Kingdom’s Hyrule expands so much on the lore surrounding the universe that was first created in Breath of the Wild. One of the major reveals is that Princess Zelda became the Light Dragon who floats above Hyrule’s cloud barrier for centuries, waiting for Link to find her at the right time.

But, there are three more dragons who circle Hyrule endlessly as well: Farosh, Naydra, and Dinraal. These three female dragons are named after the three ancient goddesses Farore, Nayru, and Din. They seem to be connected to the goddess Hylia as well, watching over her statues and shrines in the Springs of Power, Wisdom, and Courage. The Hyrule Compendium describes each dragon as a “spirit of ice/lightning/fire” who has taken the form of a dragon. But not much more is known about these dragons other than that they have existed since the beginning of this particular Hyrule.

However, seeing that Zelda became the Light Dragon after swallowing one of the Zonai’s Secret Stones, I can’t help but wonder if these three other dragons were once people too. Perhaps they were servants of Hylia who wanted to serve for eternity? Are they ancient sages? Maybe they are the actual draconified goddesses from ancient times?

Regardless, their presence in this era of Zelda is fascinating, and I wish we had more information about them! Given the hints that witnessing Zelda’s transformation offers, I like to think these dragons might be more than just flying beasts.

But what do you think? Do you think the dragons were once people? If so, who do you think they were? Let me know in the comments!
