Sometimes, it’s nice to take a break from the traditional Legend of Zelda formula, and see what other kinds of games the world has to offer.

In the past, spin-offs have often taken a backseat for most franchises, allowing the main titles to shine more. Most people ignore them altogether, as they often don’t reach the same level of quality or depth as the main series. For Zelda, these include titles such as Link’s Crossbow Training or Freshly Picked Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland.

Back in 2014, we saw the first truly successful Zelda spin-off in my opinion, with the release of Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U. It’s successor, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, was equally successful in 2020, as well as Cadence of Hyrule in 2019. These titles have proved that you don’t need traditional Zelda gameplay, or even to play as Link, to have a great game.
