Daily Debate: Which Zelda Plot Would Lend Itself Best to a Film Adaptation?
Posted on December 30 2018 by Rod Lloyd
The Legend of Zelda series tells some of the greatest stories in video game history. And we, as fans, frequently fantasize about those stories being brought to the big screen. I’ve often heard calls for Nintendo to turn Ocarina of Time into a big-budget Hollywood film or to adapt A Link to the Past into an animated epic. But with video game movie blunders like the Super Mario Bros. movie always in the backs of our minds, we want to be extra careful about how Zelda eventually makes the jump to the silver screen. We want the best Zelda story to be the basis for a film. But which story is that?
Speaking of Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past, I personally believe that the Zelda plots best suited for a movie adaptation would be those that establish the dynamic of Link, Zelda, and Ganon. Such storylines best represent the series’ core conflicts and relationships, and they best illustrate the story elements that build the foundation for the entire franchise. While the original Legend of Zelda may be a bit too light on story for a full-on film adaptation, I do believe that games like The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, which keeps the Link-Zelda-Ganon trifecta in tact, are ripe for the Hollywood treatment, animated or otherwise.
I’m certainly not an authority on this topic, so what Zelda plot do you think is best suited for a film adaptation? What about this story do you think will make it a fit for the big screen? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
