Music boxes are among some of my favorite things. I’ve collected a few over the years, but my favorite by far is my recent acquisition of a Kingdom Hearts inspired music box. This particular music box is associated with a character in the series and plays her battle theme, “Vector to the Heavens.” In the context of Kingdom Hearts, this orchestration is dramatic and epic, but in music box form, this track becomes a somber yet soothing lullaby. It sounds absolutely beautiful and I love finding excuses to open it so I can hear the music. It got me thinking of other melodies that I would enjoy hearing in this unique format, and the Zelda series was the first one that came to mind.

If I had to pick a Zelda melody that would best translate to a music box, my first pick would be “Ballad of the Windfish.” This theme is incredibly versatile: from its first appearance in Link’s Awakening as the lullaby Marin sings to a fully orchestrated, sweeping song performed live at concerts, we’ve heard this song in a variety of contexts and tempos. As a music box, this theme would be absolutely lovely. What about you, if you could pick a Zelda melody to listen to in music box form, which one would it be? Let us know in the comments!
