Out of the 21 games in the Zelda series, only five can really be considered a true sequel to a previous game. Zelda II is a direct sequel to the very first Legend of Zelda game, Majora’s Mask follows the events of Ocarina of TimePhantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks form a sort of trilogy with The Wind Waker, and A Link Between Worlds is a pseudo-sequel to A Link to the Past. The other 75% of the games in the series, while they hold important places in the much-disputed timeline, generally tell a new chapter in the ongoing saga of Link, Zelda, and the world of Hyrule.

However, Nintendo is currently hard at work on the highly anticipated sequel to 2017’s Breath of the Wild, which most people are hoping will come out sometime in 2021. While we don’t have a title for the game just yet, when it was announced, Nintendo directly referenced the fact that it will be a sequel to that groundbreaking game that helped launch the Nintendo Switch. In the history of the Zelda series, this is pretty rare, as most of the sequels discussed above are loose sequels set hundreds of years apart from the entry that came before it (with the exception of Zelda II and Majora’s Mask).

For all intents and purposes, it looks like the sequel to Breath of the Wild will feature the same Link and the same Zelda that we got to know in the first game, and the story looks like it will pick up directly after the end of Breath of the Wild — a true sequel in every sense of the word.

Which leads us to our question for the day: Which existing Zelda game would you love to see a direct sequel to? Do we need another return to the Twilight Realm from Twilight Princess? Or would you like to hop on your Loftwing and take to the skies once again? Let us know in the comments below!
