The mechanic of time travel has become a recurring aspect of Zelda games ever since 1998, where the Link in Ocarina of Time moves forward in time at an accelerated rate in order to age seven years and be properly heralded the Hero of Time. In many parts of Ocarina of Time, whether mandatory or not, players must utilize the power of the Master Sword via the Temple of Time to jump between Link as a child and Link as an adult, as the world around them is different depending on whether or not those pivotal seven years passed.

Majora’s Mask and Skyward Sword would also prove to bend the rules of time and space. In Majora’s Mask, players repeat the same three-day cycle in order to circumvent the end of the world, and even have the ability to slow or speed up time. In Skyward Sword, time-shift stones and the two gates of time are large components of puzzles and of the main story, Link making large leaps betwixt thousands of years. The question is, which of the three titles incorporated time travel the best?

Although I think all three are equally creative and deserving of praise, Skyward Sword tends to stand out for me personally. The time-shift stones in Lanayru Desert and surrounding areas made for some truly ingenious puzzles. The “shifts” in time were also quick and in the moment, the player not having to warp to and fro because of the necessity of the Temple of Time.

What do you think? Which Zelda game do you think did time travel best? Do you think time travel should be incorporated into Breath of the Wild 2? If so, which of these three games should it take from? Let us know in the comments below!
