Dripping with strange visuals, discordant music, and a dark and apocalyptic storyline, Majora’s Mask is a game I’ve come to associate with Halloween frequently over the years. From the disturbing statue of Link in Stone Tower Temple, to Pamela’s zombified father in Ikana Valley, The Moon as it’s pulled closer and closer to Termina each day, the Happy Salesman’s dramatic shifts in demeanor; I could go on about all the terrifying imagery and how it traumatized shaped me growing up. Most video games are pretty timeless and can be replayed whenever, and while that’s true of the Zelda series as well, there are some that speak to me in a specific season. The Wind Waker, for example, is a game I love to replay in the summer months. Probably because when I was a kid I had more time over the summer to play video games in general, but also, island exploration and sailing across the Great Sea is pretty evocative of summertime.

But back to Halloween! Twilight Princess is also a contender as the scariest Zelda game that would be perfect during the Halloween season (Zant’s neck snap will never not make me cringe every time), but Majora’s Mask is usually the game I find myself replaying on Halloween. Another plus is having Majora’s Mask 3D, so I can play the game on-the-go downstairs while waiting for tricker-treaters.

What about you? Is there a Zelda game you like to revisit on Halloween? Let us know in the comments!
