Super Smash Bros. Ultimate boasts the greatest roster of not only any fighting game, but of any video game, period. With each new character added, director Masahiro Sakurai makes another dream come true — at least for some folks. The Fighters Passes, especially, feel bizarrely tailor-made for me. The addition of Persona 5’s Joker already spoke to me on a deep level, but it was Banjo & Kazooie and Byleth’s inclusion that made me think “Sakurai, are you just reading my mind?” Indeed, I am eternally grateful for the lineup we have.

Having said all that, if I were to have one misgiving about the Smash roster, then it would be its lack of imagination regarding the Zelda series. Since Brawl’s release, I’ve desperately hoped these games’ Zelda representation would branch out beyond the main trio of Courage, Wisdom, and Power. There are so many colorful characters from throughout Link’s adventures that would lend themselves perfectly to Smash. And though assist trophies such as Midna, Ghirahim, and Skull Kid are definitely appreciated, those guys belong in the clubhouse proper.

Even setting those characters aside, I can’t help but view three versions of Link — all of whom play pretty similarly to one another — as a tad excessive. Now, if you were granted the opportunity to remove one of these Links in favor of another Zelda character, then which one would you choose? Personally, I’d say bye-bye to Toon Link. Despite being one of my favorite incarnations of the character from a story perspective, I find that I don’t play quite as well as him.

Looking back, that was quite the soapbox for what ultimately amounted to such a simple question. In any case, I’m curious — which Link would you toss out for one of the more distinct Zelda icons? Let us know in the comments below!
