With Tears of the Kingdom knocking on our door, there has been a plethora of deep dives into the role dragon imagery will place out in this monumental sequel. This concept made me think about the two most recent Switch games that featured dragons in the Zelda series: Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild.

Each of these dragons is portrayed differently and even carry a different role in the story. In Skyward Sword, the dragons are anthropomorphized into creatures that interact with Link and serve a critical role in restoring the Master Sword. They are at times whimsical and carry unique names like Faron, Lanayru, and Eldin–named after the provinces they preside in. In contrast, the dragons in Breath of the Wild are almost elemental, larger than life deities that traverse the grand sky above Hyrule. We are meant to chase and find them just to get a shard of their dragon parts to upgrade Link’s armamentarium. They passively glide through the sky and honestly rarely take notice of Link’s quest.

As a result, I pose this question to our community. Which type of dragon do you prefer in the Zelda series? Do you prefer a passive dragon, gliding through the sky, shedding material for Link’s usage, or rather would you prefer an interactive character that is involved with the story to unfold? I personally wished we had more interaction with the Breath of the Wild dragons and that they were involved more with the role the Champions play in the fight against Calamity Ganon. Perhaps we will get this story to unfold further in Tears of the Kingdom.
