Daily Debate: Which Sibling Duo in the Zelda Series is the Most Relatable?
Posted on October 15 2018 by Michaela El-Ters
Family is something of a foreign concept in the Zelda series. With Link often being an orphaned boy living on his own or in a community that supports him, there are few games that give the hero, or other characters, family members or siblings. With The Wind Waker being the only game to date that shows Link living with both his grandmother and younger sister, it resulted in strong storytelling motivated by the very sympathetic goal to rescue his family. There are other sibling duos besides Link and Aryll that have effectively conveyed both the joy and frustration having siblings can have, including:
- Tatl and Tael (Majora’s Mask)
- Romani and Cremia (Majora’s Mask)
- Mipha and Sidon (Breath of the Wild)
When characters have siblings to bounce off of, it humanizes them and shows off another side of their personality. Mipha’s interactions with Sidon in the Champions Ballad DLC emphasize her kindhearted nature, dedication, and patience, as well as Sidon’s desires to make his sister proud because she believes in him. Tatl is hard on Tael, but it’s because she cares about him and wants him to be safe. As a younger sister myself, it’s part of why I find Tatl and Tael the most relatable of the sibling duos — they care about each other, but not without criticism or harshness that is a necessary part of learning from mistakes or growing up. But what do you think? Which sibling duo do you think is the most sympathetic and relatable? Let us know in the comments!
