Although Breath of the Wild featured a ton of smaller nods to other Zelda games, its place in the timeline is so far removed from the rest of the series that the game occasionally feels as if it exists in its own pocket dimension. To some extent, that’s one of the title’s most admirable qualities– its insistence on carving its own path rather than relying too much on what came before.

That said, as a longtime Zelda lore buff, I would like Breath of the Wild 2’s main story to take a bit more from the preexisting mythos. Considering what looks to be the resurgence of one Ganondorf Dragmire, I’m at least hopeful that the game will lean more heavily on Hyrule’s long-distant past. Ideally, I’d want the story to draw from several major entries, but if I had to choose one game as a focal point, I’d say Skyward Sword. The 2017 adventure already touched on Zelda’s role as the reincarnation of Hylia, but let’s go even further.

Since 2011, I’ve been fascinated by Demise and his seemingly everlasting hatred. At this point, Zelda seems to be acutely aware of her cosmic destiny– does Ganondorf possess a similar sense of self-awareness? If so, then what does that mean to him? To what extent is Ganondorf truly connected to Hylia’s ancient enemy? Of course, not every detail regarding every character needs to be explored in intricate detail. Sometimes, part of the appeal comes from that mystery. Even so, when it comes Ganondorf, Demise, and the nature of this bloodstained cycle, there are some loose ends that need tying up. Given how ancient this conflict is by the time of Breath of the Wild, there’s no better time to dive further into that corner of the mythology.

What about you, though? Is there a Zelda game— outside of the first Breath of the Wild— whose lore and characters you’d particularly love to see expounded upon in Breath of the Wild 2? Let us know in the comments below!
