“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.” A quote from a well known Shakespearean play that would certainly be applicable to The Legend of Zelda franchise.

Most games in the franchise, with the exception of Breath of the Wild, have given players the opportunity to choose their own name for their main protagonist. This name would be addressed continuously throughout gameplay, in an effort to make the experience more personal.

An obvious name that a great number of fans choose is Link. This is the official name as chosen by Nintendo and as such, has become a staple name for generations. For players young and old who may be new to the Zelda universe, another obvious choice would be their own name. Then there are those gamers who pick a random name. One that they feel suits the character or even their own mood.

At eight years old my earliest experience playing my first Zelda game was when I copied a name that had already been allocated to a save file by the previous owner, as I liked how the name sounded. After pouring over my Ocarina of Time guide, I opted of course for Link and have done so on every save file ever since then since it just feels so right!

What name do you prefer to choose when creating a new save file in Zelda games? What’s the reasoning behind your choice? Let us know in the comments below!
