Daily Debate: Which Divine Beast “Assault Sequence” Is Your Favorite?
Posted on November 27 2019 by Sean Gadus
The Divine Beasts are some of the most awe-inspiring sights in Breath of the Wild. These mammoth mechanical behemoths serve as the game’s four primary dungeons. However, before a player can solve a Divine Beast’s puzzles and fight the dungeon boss, they must engage in an “assault sequence” in order to actually reach it. These sequences involve the crippling of the Divine Beasts’s mechanical systems in order to gain entry to it’s chambers.
The assault sequences are unique with their own strengths and weaknesses, and feel different from anything found in other Zelda games. This truly shows the grand ambition and scale of Breath of the Wild. While Vah Ruta and Vah Naboris test your reflexes and timing with their fast-paced locomotion, Vah Rudania requires clever problem solving and a dose of patience.
My favorite (and first) sequence was the battle against Vah Ruta in Lanayru Great Spring. The speed of riding Sidon made the battle feel extremely intense. The increasingly numerous ice obstacles made me feel like the battle had a sense of progression; as if the beast was actively trying harder and harder to thwart my assault. I believe it’s one of the most exciting moments in the game and it’s a perfect distillation of how incredible Breath of the Wild can be.
