We are all familiar with the land of Hyrule and it’s many nooks and crannies throughout the series. There have been a few games that took us outside of Hyrule, be it Lorule, Termina, Skyloft or Holodrum. In some of the games we may adventure somewhere else but still visit Hyrule at some point. No matter where the journey takes us and Link, he is always the hero. There has been a lot of talk about the upcoming Zelda titles lately. We only recently learned of the prequel to Breath of The Wild, Age of Calamity, and we have all been impatiently awaiting the teased untitled sequel. We have seen some trailers for the new game and always see Zelda and Link in some dark cave looking for some “rotting corpse”. We are never told where this cave is or what land it is in.

As of yet we have literally only scratched the surface of this new Hyrule we were given in 2017.  Link may have to listen to some old Sheikah elevator music for a bit on his way down to the Shrines, but for the most part they are all pretty close to the surface level of Hyrule. Now, we could still have a vast subterranean, or subhylian if you will, world below our feet that has either yet to be discovered or even explored. This alone could bring many new features to the game. Will Link and Zelda need to go spelunking to learn more about this vast cave system? What kinds of new challenges will this bring to the characters and series as a whole?

Another thought is something that was a huge change for the entirety of the Zelda franchise. In Breath of The Wild, Nintendo completely got rid of dungeons as we knew them, no more searching for maps and compasses as we try to find the Boss Key and the special new weapon. Instead we were given the 120+ Shrines that were mostly challenging, those blessings sure were a sigh of relief. We also had the four Divine Beasts to contend with and tame as well. Although they were all challenging in their own way, it was not quite what we know and expect from a game claiming to be a new Legend of Zelda. This makes things more interesting for the sequel. We have already tamed the Divine Beasts and conquered the excess of Shrines so what will we be doing  this time to power ourselves up? Will there be even more shrines to solve and battle through or perhaps new dungeon-esque machines to explore? The potential is of course limitless but the bounds of lore and continuity only go so far.

This all brings about the big question, what can we really expect to be new and revolutionary yet still memorable and nostalgic of the series in the newest installment? What do you think Nintendo will throw at us and our heroes for the next chapter in this never ending adventure? Leave your thoughts and ideas in the comments below!
