While the wait for the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the longest we’ve experienced across mainline titles (as I explained in my previous post), it was very nice to receive Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity back in 2020. Unlike its predecessor, this game had a direct connection to a specific mainline title Breath of the Wild.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity provided us the story of what “actually” happened 100 years before Link’s awakening in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While we thought we knew what happened through Link’s memories, Age of Calamity brought us a greater story that had further depth into the characters, battles, tension, and decisions before the Calamity attacked Hyrule. This unexpected spinoff-prequel to the previous Zelda masterpiece was praised by many, especially considering its potential to be a part of the Zelda canon. Then I thought: Can there be another Warriors game that explains an obscure part of Zelda’s history?

After the success of Age of Calamity, ideas among fans circulated. The Zelda Timeline had a lot of battles and other war-like conflicts throughout the gaps between the main series games, so it could be possible another Warriors game could take place explaining the speculated mysteries within those conflicts. One example of mysterious history of conflict in Zelda canon comes from a long-time theory of the Hero’s Shade’s backstory from Twilight Princess. The Hero’s Shade is the spirit of a warrior that teaches the Hero of Twilight expert techniques and is confirmed to be the Hero of Time via Hyrule Historia. The last canon appearance of Hero of Time before that was in Majora’s Mask, so there is quite a gap of unknown history there. We know he eventually became some sort of warrior, but what battles did he partake in? What conflicts in Hyrule led to him enlisting within the Hyrulean army? When speaking with the Hero of Twilight, he claimed to have lingering “regret.” Did that come from losing a pivotal battle? These questions are just scratching the surface of a potential story!

Similar to Age of Calamity, a Hyrule Warriors game based around the Hero of Time’s days as a knight and warrior can provide us many answers to decade old theories on what happened to him and the events during that time. If it were to follow the fashion of Age of Calamity, we could even see an alternate ending showing the survival and victory of the Hero of Time (as I am assuming Nintendo prefers the fans to see a happy ending.) Considering alternate victorious endings, we could even see a victorious approach to Ocarina of Time’s Downfall ending. This could include more information on the Sealing War and the possibilities of characters uniting to fight against Ganon’s onslaught of Hyrule and the Sacred Realm. Incorporating Hyrule Warriors games into Zelda’s unknown history of wars can be something very special! This could be a way to tie us in as we await for new mainline Zelda titles.

Where in Zelda’s history would you like to see another Hyrule Warriors game take place? Let us know in the comments below!
