Though it only appears in nine mainline games, the Master Sword is the most iconic weapon in the Zelda series, and arguably stands alongside the Triforce as its most recognizable symbol. In every time of need, the hero grows in power until becoming worthy to draw the fabled blade from its pedestal. While these beautiful threads bind the series together, each moment with the Master Sword stands unique in the franchise, adding to the intricate tapestry that is its lore. For today’s Daily Debate, let’s explore that further. What is your favorite moment with the Master Sword?

Its first true appearance in the series is in the foggy forests of A Link to the Past; however, the first glimpse of the Master Sword in Ocarina of Time hits squarely in the nostalgia nerves for many Zelda fans. After traversing Hyrule, Link places the three Spiritual Stones, draws the sword, and splits the timeline forever. I’ll never forget the wonder of seeing Link fully grown, holding the blade aloft.

For others, (those that forgive one or hundred reminders to change Wii-mote batteries), it’s impossible to separate the legendary weapon from Fi. While there are many touching moments in Skyward Sword, that final goodbye with the vociferous companion is enough to make the most hardened fan shed a tear. Hearing her signal in Breath of the Wild‘s sidequest, “Trial of the Sword”, felt like a joyous reunion.

For those less emotionally inclined gamers, or those that simply enjoy a good test of skill, the “Trial of the Sword” is indeed a celebrated moment with the Master Sword. The three rounds of trial rank among the most difficult challenges in the Zelda series, particularly on Master Mode. The thrill of holding the sword high and receiving the power upgrade is a moment of well-earned pride.

Of course, there are many other memorable moments with the Blade of Evil’s Bane — too many to cover here. Some of your favorites might include the golden upgrade (its most powerful form in the series) from A Link to the Past, or the moment Wolf Link approaches and the hero is transformed during Twilight Princess. It might even be planting the sword in Ganondorf’s head at the bottom of the ocean in The Wind Waker. With so many other iconic moments, we can’t wait to hear what speaks to you in the series.
