The Zelda bestiary is a broad one, a gargantuan gamut of vermin, ghouls and hominids. From the bloodless ReDeads and their petrifying wails to the towering, tentacled terrors that once haunted The Great Sea as Giant Octoroks, encountering such foes throughout the series has always been a highlight. In Breath of the Wild we’ve seen the return of the Lynel, a hellish beast whose finally been given the form it deserves, appearing in earlier, pixelated iterations of the series and A Link Between Worlds; a brawl with a Lynel is now an all-out conquest. Seeing how enemies now classic to the series are reincarnated in various forms and styles is one of my personal favourite things about Zelda.
Breath of the Wild brought us many powerful foes such as the similarly lesser-spotted Hinox, which returns as a towering giant of wobbling flesh and dangling weaponry. The Guardians themselves, especially earlier in the game, also inspire fear via deathly accurate laser blast. But what’s your most memorable enemy? The Iron Knuckles of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask? The shuffling, crooked Shadow Beasts of Twilight Princess? Heck, even the fury of a flurry of cuckoos has ended many a player!
