From the very beginning, the heroic quest of a youth garbed in green has immersed players into quite the adventure. Starting out as a simple tale of a hero rescuing a princess, the Zelda franchise has grown and changed, adding new characters, different settings, or turning it on its head altogether. Thus, each game has added interesting twists to the original formula.

With many unique characters and a fantasy-driven world, it’s easy to be pulled into Hyrule, as well as other places like Koholint or Termina. Our curiosity tugs us along and sparks a childlike sense of adventure. However, gameplay of slashing swords and running through fields would become lackluster without a story that drives it. Because players are meant to experience a narrative through the perspective of Link, each game carries elements that motivate players further to save Hyrule and, much like any other story, discover what happens next.

For me, I was most compelled by Skyward Sword, with Zelda and Link having an established relationship that made the separation all the more tragic. The characters showed their emotions so expressively, and I was intrigued by this different version of Hyrule, whether or not Zelda would be around the next corner, and what would happen at every turn in the story. Ghirahim was mysterious in an interesting way, and the villain being introduced at such an early part of the game allowed for that mystery to unravel as the story progressed. Additionally, the story as a whole isn’t without surprises, whether it be Groose’s sudden involvement, or the true identity of the old woman at the Sealed Grounds.

How about you? What story compelled you the most? Is there a reason why? Let us know in the comments below!
