Throughout the Zelda series, the embodiment of Link’s courage is in his bravery against monsters. Fighting is the primary action that shows his courage and thus, it is what the player does for most of the game. Whether it is a small Deku Baba or a large spider, Link faces his obstacles head-on to achieve his objective.

With so many titles, it’s interesting to think about which game handled combat mechanics best. Link’s common weapon of choice is normally a sword, and while other items provide options for strategy, a sword is what is primarily equipped. Perhaps you prefer the simplicity of The Legend of Zelda or A Link to the Past, where a swipe or a jab can occur in any direction from a top-down view. Or maybe you like Skyward Sword, where your motion matches the movement of the sword in order to be a bit more immersive.

For me, I like the combat in The Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild best, both feeling fluid and natural. In comparison to games like Twilight Princess, where fancier sword techniques are learned and frankly unnecessary, Breath of the Wild caters to my instincts in the moment. I also like the challenge of timing my dodge or shield bash correctly so to perform a flurry rush or parry respectively.
