Not since the 1980s has Dungeons and Dragons enjoyed such a prominent place in pop culture. There are podcasts, livestreams, record-breaking Kickstarter campaigns, and a whole Dungeons and Dragons themed Voltron: Defender of the Universe episode. Yet, Dungeons and Dragons is only the tip of a much larger iceberg filled with tabletop role-playing goodness. The world of tabletop role-playing games is vast and filled with all kinds of ways to play. Want something more science fiction? There’s an RPG for that. Want to play as an overly dramatic vampire draped in gothic goodness? There’s a tabletop RPG for that too. How about an officially licensed My Little Pony tabletop experience? Oh yeah, there’s that too.

In fact, officially licensed tabletop systems aren’t as uncommon as you might imagine. If Nintendo were to create a tabletop game based off The Legend of Zelda, what would it look like and how would it function? The franchise is a treasure trove of ideas that comfortably fit into the tabletop gaming experience. A quick search will reveal all sorts of non-licensed content that can be added to certain game systems. While wonderfully crafted, these bits of home brewed content don’t address how an official game would look, function, or work with the official scope of the games. So, let’s take a quick look at some of the questions an official role-playing game would have to address.

To begin, should each game be its own campaign setting, or would you rather play in a Hyrule Warriors style scenario?  Is your adventuring party aiding Link and his companions fight against Ganon, or are there other adventures to be had that don’t involve the Triforce? Are you willing to delve deep into numerous water dungeons? Finally, what races and classes should be included in an officially licensed game system? There are so many questions and possibilities!

Would you like to see an officially licensed Tabletop RPG? If so, what character would you create and what kind of setting would you like to explore? Or, better yet, have you ever played in a campaign inspired by The Legend of Zelda? Let us know in the comments!
