Nefarious, flagrant femmes have peppered The Legend of Zelda series since the very beginning.  They are foils to the stoic singularity that is Ganon’s overwhelming, sovereign presence. A flip side, a different flavor of evil, spanning his pair of broom-riding, hook-nosed Gerudo Moms to the flamboyant, murderous mages Ghirahim and Yuga; feminine energies have powered the sorcery which Link fends off time and time again.

Arguably, the first feminine villain in the Zelda series was Veran from Oracle of Ages, an adversary that we just don’t seem to talk about. She is a body-snatching sorceress, hell-bent on bringing the Kingdom of Labrynna to ruin. Possessing Nayru to get close and gain favor with Queen Ambi, she insidiously thrust the kingdom into disarray using her cunning, wits, and witchcraft. We’ve also seen Hilda of Lorule, a tragic villain who just wanted the best for her kingdom. By comparison, this perhaps makes Veran the first and last truly evil female antagonist the series has seen.

We’ve had the Link-obsessed Cia in the Hyrule Warriors spin-offs, the kooky Lady Maud in Tri Force Heroes, and hags turned Amazon in Twinrova. But is it time for another truly evil villainess to step up to the plate? To be a true, main antagonist?

For me, no one can ever replace Ganondorf. But a few homicidal harlequins aside (I’m looking at you Zant), would a new female villain add something to the rich world and lore of Zelda? Do we need new villains, or would we like to see someone return? Personally, I just want more Veran, but what do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
