A true staple of the Legend of Zelda series is the Rupee.  Green, blue, red or purple and other colors besides — the Rupee is the currency of Hyrule and is sometimes the key to allowing Link to move forward in-game.  A perfect example of this would be when Link must acquire the Deku Shield from the shop in Kokiri Forest in order to gain access to the Great Deku Tree in Ocarina of Time

Rupees have appeared in almost every Zelda game, with the exception of The Adventure of Link and Four Swords Adventures.  They can usually be acquired by defeating enemies, cutting tall grass or bushes, throwing rocks and smashing pots, rolling or dashing into trees, winning mini-games or found inside treasure chests.  Link can find Rupees lying around dungeons and the overworld, and in some games, he can lay his hands on them through selling his own items or even through gambling!

The rewards reaped from spending Rupees are often a useful and fun part of the quest itself, but the gathering of Rupees can sometimes be a bother, especially if you haven’t paid much attention to doing so in-game.  That’s why my favorite way to increase Link’s fortune is to do so in dungeons.  I think it’s great that I can immerse myself into the suspense and surprise of the dungeons in a Zelda game and come out the other end feeling accomplished, as well as with a heavier wallet!

What is your favorite way to make Rupees in the Zelda games?  Let us know in the comments below!
