Most Zelda fans can tell you instruments of some variety have featured in nearly every Zelda title, some even being the namesake for the entry. Suffice to say, instruments play an incredibly important part in the Zelda series in both function and narrative. With the last even vaguely instrument-like item being the Bell in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, it’s been some time since we’ve seen an instrument in a mainline Zelda game, so what would you want to see?

We received some important instrumental nods in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in the form of Kass, especially in his expanded narrative within The Champions’ Ballad DLC. Going off that, it would be interesting to see some greater purpose given to the accordion. It’s often portrayed as a bit of a sillier instrument in many forms of media, but the instrument evokes the sense of travel and has a bard-like mystique to it. It could perhaps be used in a way evocative of Kass as part of puzzles and to trigger memories and stories within people

Another interesting possibility would be perhaps a harmonica, an instrument that would serve to give a much more blues feeling to the game. I could imagine Link piecing together fragments of a ballad across his journey through Hyrule that slowly begin to form a more and more complete song that leads into an impactful moment in the game’s narrative when it’s complete. I can imagine this beautiful bluesy ballad slowly unfolding in a Twilight Princess-like aesthetic as the game gets darker before it finally reaches a satisfying denouement where things turn around.

What do you think of a new kind of instrument mechanic? What instrument would you want to incorporate? What would be the mechanics surrounding it? Let us know in the comments below!
