You know the adage, “never judge a book by its cover” — does that apply to games too? In my opinion it does! I’m not strictly talking about the box art of a game, but more like the promotional art and the game’s trailer. A lot of people make first opinions about a game based upon what they see before making their purchase. So, does the visual style of a Zelda game determine whether you’ll play it or not? Or will you play the game because it’s another title in the Zelda series?

Personally, I would like to get my hands on any new mainline Zelda game. I am typically one of those “show me what you got” kind of people before I purchase, but I have made a lot of exceptions and just bought a game because of the series it was in. For the longest time, I was skeptical about enjoying A Link to the Past because it was an older game. It looked different and it wasn’t what I was used to. Once I got past my visual opinion and played the game, my mind changed.

When the trailer for Breath of the Wild was released, I immediately knew it was a game that I wanted to get my hands on and play! The promotional art, gameplay, and the trailer made so much of an impression that I knew it was going to be a game that I was going to pick up immediately. My opinion holds the same in regards to Breath of the Wild 2.

What about other future Zelda games though? Well, I really think that visual style influences gamers in whether or not they will buy a game. But I also think that a franchise like The Legend of Zelda makes a lasting impression, and gamers will buy it because it’s a series that they thoroughly enjoy.

I have been disappointed by Zelda games in the past. One example would be Skyward Sword; I just didn’t like the game, and still haven’t finished it to this day. It’s a shame because I liked how it looked. There are so many things that influence us when it comes to gaming and I’m always interested to hear why people play the games that they play.

So what influences you when it comes to purchasing and playing a Zelda game? Sound off in the comments below!
