Daily Debate: What In-Universe Races Would You Like to See in the Zelda Movie?

Over 35 years of a video game franchise can introduce many different types of characters from many different races. The Zelda series boasts at least 17 different races, not including the different sects and cultures within a race, such as the Sheikah. I have a hard time believing that every race is getting screen time in the upcoming Zelda film that was recently announced. So, who is going to make the cut, and who is going to get the cut? We’re here today to talk about not just who we think we’ll see, but who we want to see!
Some races, like Subrosians and Cobbles, aren’t found in Hyrule, and so I don’t include in them in this speculation. On the flip-side, there are some races that I consider “safe” as they are prominently in almost every game and an intrinsic part of Zelda lore. Those races are:
- Hylians
- Gorons
- Gerudo
- Zora
- Blins (your typical monsters, e.g. Moblins, Bokoblins, Bulblins)
Notably absent from that list are some races that have seen a recent wealth of presence in newer games, such as the Rito, Zonai, and Koroks. While it’s highly likely these three races make the cut, I’m not considering it a 100% chance.
So, here are a few of the races I’d like to see in the Zelda film:
- Kokiri: While they may be left out in favor of the tiny and beloved Koroks, having Kokiri in a game — especially ones that have an interaction with Link similar to Ocarina of Time — would provide a great element of “upbringing” in the film, where Link can turn to old friends from the forest for help. It would be great to have Saria as a character in the film as well!
- Anouki: This is mostly because I struggle to understand what their anatomy is. Are they humans with fins? What’s under that burly coat of theirs? Regardless, this race could provide some key comic relief in the movie.
- Oocca: They’re not everyone’s favorite race, that’s for sure. Bordering on creepy, I’d be interested to see how Hollywood magic could create these characters for the silver screen. As someone who has acting experience, I would love to play the role of one of these.
