Since kicking off in 2016, Akira Himekawa’s Twilight Princess manga has proven to be a worthy adaptation of my all-time favorite video game. Rather than merely re-tell the original journey shot-for-shot, the manga complements the game in a way that only the best adaptations can. Some of the more vague elements of Twilight Princess’ story are expounded upon, while side characters are given more opportunities to shine. Even Link and Midna’s relationship is made more endearing, thanks in part to the Hylian Hero’s newfound vocal cords.

Considering that the manga has just crossed the halfway mark — at least for us readers in the west — I’m curious as to what changes you’ve enjoyed most so far. For as much as I’ve loved Link’s dynamic with other characters — not to mention his origin story — my favorite addition has been Midna and Zelda’s friendship.

As kids, the two communicated with each other through a magic fountain on Zelda’s end and a stone on Midna’s. Up until this point, virtually everything in Zelda’s life had been chosen for her. Through Midna — a fellow princess who had just stumbled into her life — she found her first, genuine friend. When Auru — one of Zelda’s caretakers at the time — discovers this, though, he blocks the entrance to the fountain. Naturally, he fears that communication between the world of light and the Twilight Realm could spell disaster. Zelda’s sudden disappearance from Midna’s life only hardens the Twilight Princess’ heart and embitters her toward the light dwellers.

For all of this manga’s wonderful additions, this is the one that — more than any other — I wish had made it into the game itself. Having just started the sixth volume, I can’t wait to see how they flesh this tale out even further. Again, though, what about you? What’s been your favorite change so far?
