Daily Debate: What Are Your Initial Hands-On Impressions of the Switch 2?
Posted on June 07 2025 by Brandon Schmitz

Discussing a video game console shortly after its launch has often been kind of tricky for me. Virtually any praise or reservations I might have should be taken with the caveat that launch day is only the start of a six-to-eight-year journey. A console may release with a stellar launch lineup – or perhaps just one major system seller – before fizzling out in the months and years that follow. Conversely, it may take another system several months or a year to find the proper cadence of noteworthy releases; but once it does, it’s smooth sailing from there.
With the Nintendo Switch 2 having been out in the wild for a couple days, many of us have gotten the chance to take the new device for a test drive. And though the games themselves will always be the most important aspect of any console, I will – for the purposes of this Daily Debate – be focusing on the system’s capabilities.
As the name implies, the Switch 2 is very much an iterative device – one that has much more in common thematically with the SNES and GameCube than it does the NES or Wii. Purely from a user-interface perspective, it’s nearly identical to its predecessor. It’s perfectly valid to find this approach uninspired, especially from a company that has been known to challenge the status quo with more outside-the-box philosophies.
Personally, though, l find the core concept of the original Switch to be too strong to abandon just yet. A significantly more powerful Switch has been my go-to request for its successor since 2017.
So, while it may appropriately be described as “the Switch with shinier graphics and faster load times,” the wholly original features it does boast have pleasantly surprised me. Given Nintendo’s spotty track record in terms of online functionality, I’ve enjoyed GameChat far more than expected. So much so that – overnight – it may have become my preferred way to communicate while playing online. Not only is the process of inviting friends to a lobby snappy and intuitive, but the connection has also remained stable the entire time. The ability to share my gameplay footage in real time, not to mention eliminating the need for a headset – it all comes together to create a more seamless and vibrant experience when gaming with my buddies.
I’d love to hear from you all, though. How has your experience been with the Switch 2 so far? Have you been enjoying the launch games so far? What are your thoughts on the similar UI? Are you as pleasantly surprised by GameChat? Let us know in the comments below!
