In Breath of the Wild, any first-time player who believes they have completely stricken enemy hordes from the face of Hyrule will receive a rude awakening in the form of the Blood Moon. The voice of Princess Zelda will announce that the celestial body “rises once again,” as Calamity Ganon’s malice gives new life to his cohorts. Most notably, this recurrent in-game event resurrects any normal enemy that Link has slain since the prior Blood Moon. And, in a more subtle way, the moon also resets the status of natural resources and treasure chests, meaning that one can never run out of materials, tools, or weapons over the course of the journey.

Fan reception of the Blood Moon has been lukewarm at best. The event has clear benefits from a mechanical and design standpoint, as it both clears up Breath of the Wild‘s long-term memory and ensures players won’t feel the frustrations of limited resources. But on the other hand, watching progress — especially in terms enemies vanquished — be seemingly undone by an in-game event is annoying and crushing. That’s not to mention the same cutscene repeated over and over again to announce the Blood Moon’s rise. So, given how the Blood Moon worked in Breath of the Wild, would you like to see the mechanic return in the sequel? Perhaps, the development team can find a different, more effective way of clearing in-game memory and preserving resources?

I personally believe that the Blood Moon should only return with significant improvements. For example, while I do think the enemy resurrection aspect of the event creates tension and difficulty in early parts of an adventure, it gets tiresome after so many hours of play. So, to improve things, perhaps players could find an item that diminishes that Blood Moon’s effects and keeps enemies in the ground. Or perhaps, during their adventure, Link and Zelda can find the source of the Blood Moon and alter its qualities. Mechanically players could, to some extent, customize the effects of the event; more casual players could reduce the frequency and severity of Blood Moons, while hardcore players could make its effects more intense.

Or maybe we just do away the whole thing altogether? Anyway, what are your thoughts on the Blood Moon’s return in Breath of the Wild 2? Do you think it could be improved? Or do you want the development team to drop it in favor of something else? Join the debate the comments below!
