Daily Debate: Should Spell Casting Be Implemented Into Future Zelda Games?
Posted on April 18 2019 by Euan Crombie

Throughout its long and twisting history, The Legend of Zelda series has had a somewhat bumpy relationship with magic spells. Ocarina of Time featured three. Farore’s Wind, Din’s Fire, and Nayru’s Love, all designed as obtainable items. Compare this to a more recent title such as Skyward Sword, and you’ll notice a distinct lack of magic spells. Should spells and magic be brought back in a future Zelda title, and if so, what could they do?
Of course, we could go down paths well traveled and bring back the aforementioned spells from Ocarina of Time. Din’s Fire and Nayru’s Love function similarly to Urbosa’s Fury and Daruk’s Protection, so they wouldn’t be too much of a stretch. And while Farore’s Wind wouldn’t have been too useful in Breath of the Wild‘s Divine Beasts, a similar mechanic was featured in Twilight Princess, so I wouldn’t be too surprised if it returned alongside more traditional dungeons, perhaps in the Link’s Awakening remake?
But what about other forms of magic? Perhaps we could see more forms of battle mechanics through spell casting? Taking this idea further, maybe some enemies could only be countered by magic– similarly to how some existing enemies can only be countered using certain items. Or maybe some way to enhance potions as seen in Skyward Sword?
Do you have any ideas? How could spell casting and magic be brought back to the Zelda series in future? Let us know in the comments below!
