To the surprise of nearly all Zelda fans, when Hyrule Historia was first released, it contained a third split of the timeline as part of the canon. The dual timeline was present, as many fans had already suspected, but the idea of a third timeline created at the supposed “death” of Link during his battle with Ganondorf in Ocarina of Time came out of nowhere, needless to say. After all, there is no indication in Ocarina of Time that this could have been a scenario since there’s no special game over scene like in Majora’s Mask.

Knowing what the book reveals, and assuming that Nintendo has indeed planned everything from day one, I can’t help but think that Ocarina of Time should have included a unique game over death if the players died against fighting Ganondorf to reinforce the possibility of a third timeline branching off. It would have heightened the experience of the game and probably given fans a lot to talk about as well. Imagine theorizing about the third timeline based on this unique in-game death, and then having it confirmed by a official book created by Nintendo? It would have been a really cool experience for a lot of fans. What do you think of the third timeline splitting from Ocarina of Time? Could it have been justified with a unique scene?
