Come September 2019, we’ll get this decade’s last remake of an older Zelda title in the form of Link’s Awakening for the Nintendo Switch. This will close this decade out with five remakes altogether. The succession of remakes all started with Ocarina of Time 3D, which is a remake that still leaves me conflicted to this day. I’ve often wondered if remaking Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 3DS was the best way to go about a remake of the Nintendo 64 classic.

When Ocarina of Time 3D was released, I was ecstatic to get a remake of the game that defined my childhood. The original game had not only introduced me to the Zelda series, but to gaming as a whole. Once the honeymoon phase with the remake wore off, I got a bit more critical of the game. My main gripe (that seems to have lasted) is the desire to play an HD remake of Ocarina of Time on a television screen.

As a positive, it was cool to be able to play a portable version of Ocarina of Time. This aspect of the remake was something I appreciated more around the time it released. I was still too young to drive, so I used to play games on my 3DS to make long car trips tolerable. Back in 2011, I took a long car trip to visit out of state family. I was successful in my attempt to 100% complete Ocarina of Time 3D during this journey. Looking back, playing one of my favorite video games did ease up some of that travel time. Admittedly, I see how it made sense to remake Ocarina of Time for the 3DS, but I feel like in the long term it may have been better if it was made as an HD remake for the Wii U instead.

How do you all weigh in? Was the 3DS the perfect console for the remake of Ocarina of Time? Or should it have been an HD remake on the Wii U? And let’s address the elephant in the room; the Nintendo Switch is both a Home and Handheld console – if we were to get an HD port of Ocarina of Time 3D it’d be a dream come true. Do you forsee it happening? Sound off in the comments below.
